Resources and Victoria BC Attractions
Staying at Fairholme Manor, you are perfectly situated to soak in Victoria’s history, surrounded as you are by many of the most unspoiled turn-of-the-century architecture to be found anywhere on the west coast of the Americas. Take a walk around your neighbourhood, starting with the amazing gardens and ponds of Government House, located literally right next door, and of course Craigdarroch Castle, just up Joan Crescent (off Rockland), a genuine, full-blown castle built for pioneering coal Baron James Dunsmuir for his wife (though he never got to live in it himself). Then walk up (to your right) on Rockland avenue to admire the great old mansions built by the businessmen who came to Victoria BC (mostly from the British Isles) to seek fame and fortune in the New World.
If you’re feeling like a little more exercise, head west instead (to your left) down Rockland Avenue towards the city proper. Again, you will enjoy gazing at the wonderfully preserved old houses that make up the historic Rockland and Fairfield neighbourhoods.
Take a right on Moss Street from Rockland, and two blocks up the hill on your left you’ll find the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria. This is home to one of the finest collections of Emily Carr, a native daughter of Victoria British Columbia who is arguably western Canada’s most revered and talented early artists.
Make your way back down Pentrelew Place to Rockland again, and then turn right on Cook Street. Soon after, turn left on Fort Street, known as Victoria’s “Antique Row”, where scores of shops offer every kind of antique, from furniture to jewelry to china, for the discriminating collector
